Fellow headliners Neil Young & Crazy Horse also lead the 2012 VOODOO line-up which once again features artists from a variety of musical genres, while also reflecting the cultural gumbo that defines this historic and beloved American city.  The preliminary line-up also includes:  Skrillex; Justice; Tomahawk; Say Anything; Bootsy Collins; Gary Clark Jr.; and Preservation Hall Jazz BandVOODOO’s full line-up of 150 acts will be unveiled in the coming months.

“I believe this year’s line-up is developing into something really special,” says Stephen Rehage, the founder/producer of VOODOO.  “Green Day’s set in 2004 is one of the greatest performances in the festival’s 13-year history.  Having them choose to do their only U.S. show of 2012 at Voodoo is pretty extraordinary. And the confirmation of Neil Young & Crazy Horse is epic.  They are one of a handful of artists that you hope to have the privilege to work with at some point in your career.  It’s what you dream of when you create something like Voodoo.”

Posted in Artist Watch, New Music, News with tags , , , , , , , , , , on May 4, 2012 by Randy

Two legendary groups join forces as Carlos Santana and the Santana Band announce six special co-headlining concerts with The Allman Brothers Band during July 2012. The dates kick off July 22 at the Darien Lake Performing Arts Center in Darien Lake, NY, and wrap July 30 at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD. Highlights also include shows at Nikon at Jones Beach Theater on July 24, and the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ on July 25. Tickets for the six dates begin going on-sale May 4.

It is a delight and an honor to finally share the stage, and the music, with Gregg Allman, Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes and The Allman Brothers Band,” says Carlos Santana. This is something that we’ve hoped to make happen for many years.” These special concerts follow the first leg of U.S. dates on Santana’s Shape Shifter Tour 2012.

Previously, Santana and The Allman Brothers have only intersected at major festivals. On touring together, Gregg Allman says, “We’ve all looked forward to doing this for a very long time.” The Allman Brothers Band line-up includes Gregg Allman (vocals and keyboards), Butch Trucks (drums, tympani), Jaimoe (drums), Warren Haynes (vocals, lead and slide guitar), Derek Trucks (slide and lead guitar), Oteil Burbridge (bass), and Marc Quinones (congas and percussion).  Earlier this year, the group was honored with a special GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award.

Santana’s tour dates with The Allman Brothers follow the May 15, 2012 release of Shape Shifter, their latest album-and the first for Carlos Santana’s new label Starfaith Records. The 13-song set is an instrumental tour de force long awaited by fans (one song features vocals by Santana’s lead vocalists Andy Vargas and Tony Lindsay). The album also features Chester Thompson on keyboards, Dennis Chambers on drums, Benny Rietveld on bass, Salvador Santana on keyboards, Raul Rekow on congas and Karl Perazzo on percussion.

Since Santana emerged from the San Francisco Bay Area music scene in the 1960s, the group has sold more than 100 million records, reached more than 100 million fans at concerts worldwide, and been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Santana has won 10 GRAMMYs, including a record-tying nine for a single project, 1999’s Supernatural (including Album of the Year and Record of the Year for “Smooth”). With the 2010 release of Guitar Heaven: The Greatest Guitar Classics of All Time, Santana joined the Rolling Stones as one of only two music acts in Billboard history to score at least one Top Ten album in each decade from the 1960s on. Among other honors, Carlos Santana is #20 on Rolling Stone’s list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time”-“Santana’s crystalline tone and clean arcing sustain make him the rare instrumentalist who can be identified in just one note.”

Heritage Hunter Tour Review: Live from Pittsburgh

Posted in All Metal, News, Reviews with tags , , , , , , , , on April 23, 2012 by Randy

When the Heritage Hunter Tour kicked off on April 4th, Mastodon and Opeth knew that pulling off 29 shows in 38 days was going to be a grueling ride.  With most of the North American tour consisting of stops in the United States, it also includes two different stints in Canada.  Both bands are veterans of the game, making them quite capable of pulling off an unforgettable experience for fans of all ages…any tour…large or small.

Of the two headlining acts, Opeth opened the Pittsburgh show with some of the most technical progressive metal heard around the world.  Hailing from Stockholm, Sweden, these guys are one of the best at what they do and seeing it live makes you appreciate their work even more.  With tracks like Window Pane and Deliverance, they certainly have the tunes to keep a house on their feet for an entire hour plus set.  From start to finish they pour out everything they have and leave it all on the stage, leaving the entire crowd begging for more by night’s end.  Opeth is certainly a must see for any American metal head…but watch closely, because an elaborate North American tour isn’t something that occurs all that often.

With Mastodon headlining, the show would be one to remember.  Ripping through cuts Sleeping Giants and Spectrelight, they kept the crowd’s attention for the entire night like an ADHD gamer playing the latest HALO.  Granted there was some disconnect with the fans, the band was strictly business on stage.  The entire set was treated like it was their last, showcasing their passion and energy.  It was a display of pure American sludge/progressive metal, that everyone who’s ever listened to metal can appreciate and enjoy.  Bottom line, Heritage Hunter Tour is a must see.

REPTAR SELLS OUT SHOWS IN AUSTIN, CHICAGO, LOS ANGELES, AND NEW YORK CITY AHEAD OF RELEASE OF DEBUT ALBUM :: BAND PLAYS TO OVER 5,000 PEOPLE ON HEADLINE TOUR :: BODY FAUCET DUE OUT MAY 1, 2012 ON VAGRANT RECORDS

Posted in Artist Watch, New Music, News, Releases with tags , , , , , , on April 19, 2012 by Randy

LOS ANGELES, CA – April 18, 2012 – Reptar continue to sell out tour dates on their headline tour weeks ahead of the May 1st release date of their debut album, Body Faucet, on Vagrant Records.  The band SOLD OUT their headline stop in Austin, TX at Stubbs Jr. the last week of February then went back to the market for SXSW playing 13 shows that had crowds lining up into the streets to check out their set.   Additionally, the band SOLD OUT dates at The Echo in Los Angeles, CA, Schubas in Chicago, IL and the Bowery Ballroom in New York City.

Produced by Ben Allen (Animal Collective, Gnarls Barkley, Washed Out), Body Faucet is the follow up to the group’s heralded debut EP Oblangle Fizz Y’all, which Rolling Stone praised for its, “…blend of upbeat rhythms, reggae-infected vocals and psychedelic textures.” Body Faucet finds the band delving deeper into world-music influences to compliment their unique blend of danceable and electro infused pop.  The New York Times called the music “Kinetic, danceable rock that mingled electronics with African and Caribbean cross-currents,” while the New Yorker called it “keyed-up, Afro-pop-inflected indie rock.”

Fans can currently stream album tracks “Sebastian” and “Orifice Origami” at the band’s SoundCloud. “Orifice Origami” is also available for free download in exchange for email at the band’s newly designed website.
