Review: Emmure – Live at Altar Bar Pittsburgh, PA 3/7/2014

Posted in Artist Watch, News, Photos, Reviews, Shows on March 22, 2014 by Randy

The Mosh Lives Tour is the second tour to come to the Altar Bar in Pittsburgh with a stacked line up. With Emmure headlining, it was bound to be a kickass tour, especially with support from killer bands Volumes and Thy Art is Murder, including two big up and coming bands (Sworn In and Gideon).  Altar Bar was sold out, and if this first show is a sign of things to come you better be ready for one hell of a beating.  From the first song to the last note, shit got CRAZY in Pittsburgh!  There was everything from hardcore dancing to stage diving, and even some blood shed… and that was just the first two bands!
Sworn In kicked things off…these guys are in the process of taking the industry by storm and are sure to be headlining these intense tours within a year or so.  They’re just a group of young kids who play really heavy music and write deep dark lyrics that connect with kids so well, and they have showmanship like no other.  If you’re into any kind of deathmetal/deathcore, then they are a band that needs to be on your radar.

The second band to take stage is Alabama hardcore band: Gideon.  They have been working like crazy the past three years or so playing tour after tour and leaving every bit of themselves on stage after every performance.  Next to perform was Thy Art is Murder and Volumes; both bands brought the roof down (like there was any left to be brought down after Sworn In and Gideon) and made everyone in the building get up off their feet.  During both sets there were circle pits all over the venue on top of kids stage diving and guitar players climbing on speakers for solos and epic bass drops.

Last but certainly not least, was Victory Records flagship band Emmure, led by Frankie Palmeri. Frankie and Emmure have been the center of attention over the last few weeks due to their new album (Eternal Enemies), and one track specifically that blatantly suggests that kids should take guns to school…but as Emmure has witnessed before, bad publicity is better than no publicity.  With that said, they clearly showed that they were worthy of the headlining slot.  With all the haggard bodies after the first four bands you’d almost think that the place would be emotionless by the time Frankie and the boys took the stage.  Think again, because the floor came alive with no safe place for anyone.  They played nearly every song that you can think of, from tunes off their first record to some fresh jams that hadn’t been heard by many.  If you have yet to purchase tickets for the show in your town, I suggest that you do before it’s too late because you’ll regret missing these brutal bands all at once.

KILL DEVIL HILL are proud to announce the addition of TYPE O NEGATIVE drummer Johnny Kelly to the band. Kelly, who also plays with DANZIG and his own band A PALE HORSE NAMED DEATH, replaces the recently departed Vinny Appice.

“I’m really excited about coming on board with Kill Devil Hill,” says Kelly. “I’ve been a fan since their debut and have known the guys for a long-time. It’s also clear that I have some really big shoes to fill. I’m ready for that challenge as I prepare for KDH’s next chapter – this is gonna be a blast!”

The band will play their first shows with Kelly behind the kit April 4-6 [see dates below], three warm-up shows before embarking on an Australian run with KILLSWITCH ENGAGE. More expansive North American dates will be announced shortly.

Adds KILL DEVIL HILL bassist Rex Brown: “We all have a lot of love and respect for Vinny and have been honored to have jammed with him over the last few years – we wish Vinny well with all his future endeavors, it has been a blast!”

“It’s been a great musical adventure from the beginning, but the time has now come to go our separate ways and continue to make music that we love,” says Appice of his decision to leave the band.

Featuring PANTERA and former DOWN bassist Rex Brown, ex-PISSING RAZORS frontman Dewey Bragg, acclaimed session/touring guitarist MARK ZAVON and now TYPE O NEGATIVE, DANZIG and A PALE HORSE NAMED DEATH drummer Johnny Kelly, KILL DEVIL HILL deliver a crushing sound that combines a contemporary feel with a classic aesthetic that few bands today can rival. SCARE DON’T FEAR Announced As
First KBB RECORDS Signing

ASKING ALEXANDRIA guitarist BEN BRUCE and co-manager KYLE BORMAN are proud to announce the launch of KBB RECORDS and the signing of the label’s first act, SCARE DON’T FEAR.

“After years of planning, touring, writing and learning, and after ups and downs, arguments and agreements, I have grown to not only love the music industry, but understand it and respect it,” says co-founder BEN BRUCE. “KBB Records is a label run by artists, for artists. With my love and passion for music along with my knowledge and understanding of the music industry it’s our goal to work alongside incredible artists of all genres and to create and release amazing music for the world to fall in love with.”

The first band signed to the new label is SCARE DON’T FEAR, a Providence, RI-based fusion of hip-hop and metal.

“Everyone in SCARE DON’T FEAR is extremely proud to be a part of KBB RECORDS. SDF are huge fans of ASKING ALEXANDRIA, so when Ben and Kyle approached us about teaming up, we were stoked. We have been working at this goal for over five years and it’s a very rewarding feeling to not only get signed, but to get signed to a label that has such an amazing team behind it. Adds Kyle Borman about the new label: “KBB started as a small recording studio that Ben and I started together a few years ago with the intentions of providing traveling bands a means to record high end, professional records and demos while out on the road. Together, Ben and myself have managed to turn what started out as a small, mobile recording studio, into an artist friendly record label with a team of staff with the experience and passion that can rival even the largest record labels around the world. KBB Records is dedicated to developing talented and passionate artists of all genres and helping them share their music with the world and accomplishing their dreams.”
