Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine Schools Fans with Guitar Prodigy

Heavy Metal legend revolutionizes music lessons with new interactive app

LOS ANGELES, CA – Ranked No. 1 by Joel McIver in “The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists,” Dave Mustaine godfathered fast-heavy-metal guitar generations, first as the original lead guitarist for Metallica, and then as the founder of legendary Megadeth.

Now, Mustaine has teamed with the creators of Rock Prodigy to give his legions of fans an entirely new way to experience and learn his music. Available today on iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch, Dave Mustaine: Guitar Prodigy is an interactive application that teaches fans how to play Megadeth songs on ANY guitar.

Mustaine and his pro guitar team coach fans through each lesson. The application uses real master tracks and listens to every note played, providing instant feedback on your performance; it’s like taking private lessons with Dave.

There is truly no better way to appreciate music than to actually play it and Mustaine wants you to start shredding on guitar, saying, “If you have a guitar, if you can run an app, you will soon be playing classic Megadeth songs, like ‘Holy Wars’ and ‘Tornado of Souls,’ and also our new hit single, ‘Public Enemy No.1!’ I personally reviewed all of these songs, so no more bunk transcriptions and bad tabs; it’s just like having a private guitar lesson from me. Also with my app, you can actually slow the parts down to make sure they are perfect!!”

Dave Mustaine: Guitar Prodigy includes several Megadeth mega-shredding hits like “Tornado of Souls,” “Holy Wars… The Punishment Due,” and “Public Enemy No. 1” from Megadeth’s new album TH1RT3EN. Also included are a number of progressive bite-sized “Micro Lessons” created by Mustaine himself covering areas like rhythm, technique and theory revealing the true genius behind his music.

The app comes with multiple skill levels from beginner to advanced, and even features a leader board to show off top scores. Never before has there been an affordable way for a fan to get a one-on-one connection with the artist, to experience the music – by playing the music.

MEGADETH RECEIVE THEIR TENTH GRAMMY NOMINATION FOR “BEST HARD ROCK/HEAVY METAL PERFORMANCE” OF THE NEW SONG ‘PUBLIC ENEMY #1’ FOUNDER DAVE MUSTAINE TO APPEAR ON VH1 CLASSIC’S THAT METAL SHOW THIS SATURDAY 12/3

Posted in All Metal, Artist Watch, News, Releases with tags , , , , , , , , on December 2, 2011 by Randy

MEGADETH–who wrap a tour of South America tonight (12/1) in Costa Rica–have received their tenth Grammy nomination for their latest effort. The group–singer/guitarist DAVE MUSTAINE, drummer SHAWN DROVER, guitarist CHRIS BRODERICK and bassist DAVID ELLEFSON–got a “Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Performance” nomination for their new single “Public Enemy #1” off their latest album TH1RT3EN (Roadrunner Records).  The “Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Performance” category is, eerily, category #13.

Of the nomination, MEGADETH founder DAVE MUSTAINE says, “In such uncertain times, it’s just an honor to be recognized by our peers, and anything above that is remarkable.”  Check out the song’s video here: http://youtu.be/qHMUyHZi440 or their performance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” here: http://youtu.be/JgXEnIhCMsI“Public Enemy #1” actually marks the second Grammy nomination for music from TH1RT3EN, as the song “Sudden Death” was first unveiled in the 2010 video game “Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock” and received a “Best Metal Performance” nod.

The band’s 13th album, the appropriately titled Th1rt3en, was released November 1 and debuted at #11 on the Billboard Top 200 chart and #1 on the Billboard Hard Rock chart. The album also landed on international charts including Top 10 placements in Argentina, Finland, Korea and Japan.

While promoting the critically praised TH1RT3EN, MUSTAINE stopped by the VH1 Classic’s studios to chat with That Metal Show. A sneak peek of the episode–which will air this Saturday, 12/3 at 11/10pm CT–can be seen here: http://www.vh1.com/video/misc/715864/that-metal-show-season-9-episode-3-dave-mustaine.jhtml#id=1675201.

In other MEGADETH news, the group will again launch their acclaimed GIGANTOUR in 2012. The tour also features MOTÖRHEAD, VOLBEAT and LACUNA COIL, all personally picked by MUSTAINE.  It will kick off January 26 in Camden, NJ.  Before wrapping February 28 in Denver, CO, the tour will make stops all across the U.S. and Canada including a January 28 show in New York and February 24 in Los Angeles (full itinerary below).  The new www.gigantour.com website is now up and running featuring the latest news and video for all performing artists as well as a look back to previous tours. Tickets are available via the website as are MEGADETH Ultimate VIP Packages. Packages include meet ‘n greet photo op with MEGADETH band members, priority access general admission ticket, pre-show refreshments, specially designed MEGADETH t-shirt, exclusive lithograph, laminate and more. Packages are limited.

In a three-out-of-four star CD review, USA Today’s Brian Mansfield wrote, “The material stretches from tunes that sound like snarly, early Alice Cooper to politically minded thrash, a wide-ranging approach that should give all the group’s fans something they like…(11/1/11)” while Billboard’s Gary Graff called the record “a ripping, muscular exercise in hard-hitting rage ‘n roll…Th1rt3en shows they’re not ready to rust in peace quite yet (11/5/11).” Dan Epstein of Revolver raved “…from the opening blast of ‘Sudden Death,’ there’s no mistaking the innate Megadeth-ness of it all…the two Daves are now once again churning up acres of scorched earth together the way they used to do in the band’s prime.  But the album also marks drummer Shawn Drover’s third recorded outing with the group, and guitarist Chris Broderick’s second, which may be why Th1rt3en swings and swaggers like no Megadeth album in recent memory…Megadeth’s best and most vital album of the 21st century…(Nov/Dec 2011).”

MEGADETH ANNOUNCE THIRTEENTH ALBUM, TITLED TH1RT3EN ALBUM DUE OUT VIA ROADRUNNER RECORDS THIS NOVEMBER

BAND APPEARING ON ROCK STAR ENERGY DRINK MAYHEM FESTIVAL ALL SUMMER LONG

HISTORIC BIG FOUR SHOW WITH METALLICA,

SLAYER AND ANTHRAX SET FOR SEPTEMBER 14th

New York, NY:  MEGADETH, easily one of the most recognized and culturally significant names in hard rock music for the past three decades, are pleased to announce the forthcoming release of their thirteenth album, titled TH1RT3ENThe album will be released November 1, 2011 via Roadrunner RecordsTH1RT3EN follows up 2009’s Endgame, which was one of the most celebrated albums of the pioneering band’s storied career. Anticipation is high and fans are anxious for a taste of new music from the legends, who have sold over 25 million albums globally throughout the course of their career, and they will get it imminently.

DAVE MUSTAINE is incredibly proud of the music put forth on the new recording, saying, “This record is the culmination of my work over the 13 records I recorded. There are moments on TH1RT3EN that capture my every emotion, and other moments where I am releasing feelings I never knew existed!  My proudest moments of my musical career are captured on TH1RT3EN.”

TH1RT3EN also marks the recorded return of bassist Dave Ellefson who was part of the band’s classic lineup from 1983 to 2002. In a move that delighted the band’s legion of diehards, Ellefson returned to performing live with Megadeth in early 2010 and has remained a fixture on the stage ever since. This is the first time Ellefson has played on a Megadeth record since 2002’s Rude Awakening.

The title has several levels of meaning, which leader and guitar deity DAVE MUSTAINE, who first picked up an axe at the age of 13, revealed in a recent chat with RollingStone.com, saying, “I was born on September 13th; this is my thirteenth record. It just seemed like it was the right thing to do to call it TH1RT3EN.”

The band is spending its summer dominating and decimating the main stage of the fourth annual Rock Star Energy Drink Mayhem Festival alongside Godsmack and Disturbed. The band will cap off a busy and headline-making summer by performing as part of “The Big 4” once again, this time in New York at Yankee Stadium alongside Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax. The only previous “Big 4” show in the U.S. took place in April in Southern California.

The band also recorded an original track, “Never Dead,” specifically for the NeverDead action-adventure video game franchise. “Never Dead” will appear on TH1RT3EN. Additionally, “Sudden Death” was recorded for Guitar Hero: Warriors Of Rock and will appear on the album.

With nine Grammy nominations under their bullet belts and having enjoyed five consecutive Platinum and multi-Platinum certifications, as well as seven Gold certifications during their career, MEGADETH need no introduction. They’ve essentially written the book on heavy metal and hard rock, gaining momentum with each critically lauded release. In 2010, MUSTAINE released his first book, Mustaine:  A Heavy Metal Memoir, which hit the New York Times bestseller list in hardcover (and is now being re-released in paperback).  In a review, the Toronto Globe & Mail said, “Dave Mustaine’s memoir is the narrative of a struggling, hard-won music career. It is also a story of survival, redemption and faith…Dave Mustaine is a legend in heavy metal; he has written music that has inspired generations of fans, and he has proven that with faith, anything is possible. Transcending simple religion and music, Mustaine’s Heavy Metal Memoir will leave you moved and inspired (8/25/10).”
